Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) is an integral part of any emergency response, and is needed to ensure that communities, households and individuals have the necessary knowledge, skills and resources to practice health promoting behaviours. Understanding social norms and other barriers that influence individual behaviors is an essential prerequisite to designing effective SBC initiatives for improved nutrition outcomes. The Global Nutrition Cluster (GNC) provides technical support to practitioners of nutrition programmes in emergency contexts, on strategic use of SBC approaches and activities to promote changes in knowledge, attitudes, norms, beliefs and behaviours for improved nutrition outcomes.

In an effort to support capacity strengthening of nutrition practitioners on different aspects of SBC, the Global Nutrition Cluster organized a series of four online workshops between April and June, 2024. Initially a google form was circulated to invite expression of interest in joining the workshop series. A total of 465 responses were received, of which 197 were from local and national organizations.

Based on the tremendous response, two batches of workshops were conducted simultaneously, where-in around 60 applicants (30 per batch) from local and national organizations were selected to participate in these workshops. The workshops were conducted in English, with Arabic interpretation in one of the batches based on the preferences shared. These two-hour sessions were designed to be interactive and included practice sessions with selected SBC tools and resources.

The workshop was delivered across four sessions covering the below topics. Recordings for these sessions are available at the bottom of the page, along with the slides, and other resources.

Session 1 (April 18 and 23), The ABC of SBC: The session covered basic concepts, principles and theories of SBC and what we need to do differently to achieve shifts in social norms, gender norms and behaviors.

Session 2 (April 25 and 30), Nuts and Bolts: Using formative research findings to develop an SBC strategy. Moving from strategy to action, embedding SBC in the program action plan.

Session 3 (May 02 and 07) The Creative Hat: Developing locally relevant creative communication messages and materials, pre-test of materials, interactive SBC activities.

Session 4: (May 30 and June 04) Measuring Change: Monitoring SBC activities based on ideation factors, embedding SBC in program monitoring systems and impact evaluation.
