Simplified Approaches

"Simplified approaches" are modifications to national and global protocols for treating child wasting, designed to expand access to early detection and treatment by streamlining and optimizing care in health facilities and communities.

Early Detection & Treatment of Child Wasting

Children suffering from wasting are up to 11 times more likely to die than well-nourished children, making it one of the leading causes of child mortality. Yet, current treatment services reach only one-third of those in need. To save more lives, these services must be more accessible, efficient, and easier to implement—and that’s where Simplified Approaches come in.  

What are Simplified Approaches?

Simplified Approaches aim to expand access to early detection and treatment of child wasting by streamlining and optimising care both in health facilities and communities. There is no single protocol—rather, a set of modifications designed to improve effectiveness, quality, coverage, and cost-efficiency. The most implemented and researched simplified approaches are:

Simplified Approaches Learning Event

In December 2021, the Simplified Approaches Working Group organised a learning event with the objective of increasing knowledge & understanding on how to implement simplified approaches.
